History of the Aegean Hybrid Cat

The Aegean cat comes from the Cycladic Islands of Greece in the Aegean Sea. They are considered one of the oldest domesticated cat breeds in the world and are very common in Greece and Turkey where they hang out at fishing ports and are fed by the local sailors. In Greece, the Aegean Hybrid cat is considered a national treasure! They were developed as a formal breed in the early 1990s by breeders in the up and coming Greek animal appreciation. The breed isn’t yet recognized but fancy breeder organizations but is celebrated for being the only native Greek type of cat.

Characteristics of the Aegean Hybrid Cat

Greek Cat

The Aegean Hybrid Cat is medium in size - males usually weigh between 9-10 pounds and females between 7-9 pounds. They typically have short hair that is plush and can be brushed with a brush or comb. The coat is usually mostly white with spots and patterns in many different colors, including black, white, red, fawn, gray, blue, Bi-color and Tri-color and their color patterns vary depending on the hybrid and litter. Their features are pretty typical of most hybrid cats with muscular bodies, ears with rounded tips and almond shaped eyes that can be any shade of green, blue or yellow. They typically have a thick tail that matches their mid-size body.

Grooming for Aegan Hybrid Cats

Aegan Hybrid cats shed moderately and require regular grooming to keep their coat in good shape. Grooming helps to stimulate circulation, massage the skin and remove debris and loose hair to keep the cat cool and clean. It will also help reduce the amount of hair they shed around the house. Having a pet bed will help contain the shedding to a certain area as well.

Aegean Hybrid Cats as Pets

Cat in Greece

The Aegean Hybrid cat tends to be very smart and lively and very good with people. They have good communication skills and are very friendly, unlike some cat breeds that prefer to stick to themselves. This makes them excellent choices for families with children because they are sweet and docile. Because this cat breed originated on an island, they tend to like water - a rare trait for a feline! They sometimes even go fishing for themselves to catch a meal. If you live by a water source, they might be tempted to go fishing or at least dip their toes in from time to time and should be safe doing so. However, if you keep fish as pets or have a koi pond, be careful because the Aegean Hybrid might see your aquatic friends as a meal!

The Aegean Cat makes a great member of the family and can adapt to spaces big and small - so don’t worry if you live in an apartment because they don’t need a lot of space to roam around. They do love at least minimal access to the outdoors, however, so if you have an enclosed balcony or patio, he will probably enjoy lying out in the sun from time to time.

If you're looking for a friendly, sociable and easy-to-care-for cat for your home, the Aegean Hybrid cat might be just right for you!
